2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid First Look Review: An Electrified Edge

2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid First Look Review: An Electrified Edge
The all-new Toyota Tundra Hybrid pickup truck is a vast improvement over its predecessor. It looks better, has a thoroughly modernized interior, and is more capable than before. But perhaps the most significant update is the addition of a new hybrid powertrain known as i-Force Max. Producing 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, it goes up against the Ford F-150 PowerBoost V6 hybrid. The Toyota is a little more powerful, but Ford's hybrid truck starts at a lower price. Still, it's the best combination of power and efficiency we've seen in Toyota's full-size truck.

Toyota Tundra Hybrid Release Date

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid's release date has been scheduled for spring 2022 in the USA. Although it will be coming out a year after its direct Ford rival, the Tundra Hybrid's better power and torque could see it luring away a few shoppers from the Blue Oval.

Toyota Tundra Hybrid Price

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Hybrid's price starts at an MSRP of $52,300 for the Limited 4x2 in CrewMax form with the 5.5-foot bed. In the same configuration, the price goes up to $60,390 for the Platinum and $61,090 for the 1794 Edition. The cheapest 4x4 model is the Limited CrewMax with the 5.5-foot bed at $55,300. The TRD Pro will cost $66,805 and the most expensive Tundra Hybrid model of all is the posh Capstone at $73,530. All prices exclude a destination charge of $1,695. There are plenty of trims to choose from, so just do your homework.

The Toyota's main rival is the Ford F-150 pickup truck with its PowerBoost V6 hybrid engine. The 2022 F-150 XL SuperCrew starts at around $10,000 less with the hybrid engine, although the base Tundra Hybrid is a bit better specified. While the Ford has 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque, the Tundra Hybrid edges those outputs with 437 hp and 583 lb-ft. Ram and Chevrolet rivals currently do not offer full hybrid versions of their full-size pickups, but they do have large-capacity V8s for buyers still wanting to go that route.

New Toyota Tundra Hybrid Exterior: Tough, Not Pretty

The 2022 Tundra Hybrid's exterior, like the conventionally-powered Tundra range, looks bolder than ever before. The new grille is truly colossal in size, but it looks markedly different from one trim to the next. On the TRD-Pro, there's a unique grille with TOYOTA lettering and all-terrain tires. Wheel sizes range from 18 inches to 22 inches in the case of the range-topping Capstone. It's far from graceful, but the Tundra has a masculine appearance that will find favor with many truck shoppers.

LED headlights, LED fog lights, and heated power wing mirrors are all standard. For the Capstone, expect premium features like power running boards, a power bed step, and a power moonroof. The TRD Pro is the most capable version so comes with a front skid plate.

The Toyota Tundra Hybrid's exterior colors include Super White, Wind Chill Pearl, Supersonic Red, Army Green, Magnetic Gray Metallic, and Midnight Black Metallic.
